The crank hub issue refers to a problem where the crank hub which connects the crank shaft to the timing gears can slip under high performance, when this takes place, the engine will drop out of timing causing the piston to hit the valves resulting in catastrophic engine failure. This problem is mainly found in the S55 engines. These engines are high performance engines however abrupt gear changes and high engine tuning puts excessive strain on the crank hub and is known to be associated with bring about this issue. The crank hub bolt can also run slack resulting in this issue. This isn’t the owner’s fault but a poor design by BMW in such a powerful engine. Some of the symptoms you will experience when this issue is coming along will be engine warning lights, rough idle, loss of power and then engine failure. If you experience engine failure, the engine will need rebuilding or replacing and this will be very expensive but at Praetorian Motors Ltd. we will rebuild it and upgrade the crank hub at the same time to prevent any future issues.

Solution:

The only solution is to replace the crank hub with an aftermarket upgraded crank hub that will offer improved grip using pins and splines.
