BMW fitted the N62 engine in its V8s from 2001 to 2009. These engines developed a coolant leak in the front timing chain cover due to the seal in the coolant transfer pipe splitting. This is commonly known as the “coolant transfer pipe leak” on many online forums.

Symptoms: When you have this issue, you will see coolant weeping from a hole in the front timing chain cover. The coolant warning light will come on. You will observe coolant leaking from under your car and not know where it may be coming from. Most of the time you would not be aware that it is leaking as most times it tends to leak out coolant while the car is parked overnight. This pipe is located under the valley pan and the only way to change it is to remove the timing case front cover. This is very costly and can require engine removal.
