BMW fitted the N62 engine in its V8s from 2001 to 2009. These engines will develop a severe oil leak coming from behind the alternator bracket which is located on the passenger side on UK models. This is due to the Gasket located behind the Alternator Bracket failing. This oil leak can be very severe and without notice destroy your engine if not noticed. This is commonly known as the “alternator bracket gasket oil leak” on many online forums.

Symptoms: It normally starts off as a slow leak, then the seal eventually snaps. This results in the engine pouring the oil out while driving which will lead to oil pressure loss and damage to the engine.

In its early stages you will have to keep topping up your oil, you will notice oil pooling on the floor after leaving the car to sit for a bit. You will avoid parking on your driveway due to this oil leak messing up the drive. The area on the left of the car will also be very wet with oil, the under carriage of your car will be covered in oil, these are all signs of a failing or snapped alternator bracket gasket.

This is very expensive to fix at the dealer, costing £2000 upwards.
