On BMW N62 engines fitted in most v8 from 2002 onwards, they develop blue smoke while idling and pulling away after a stop at traffic lights. You can also see blue smoke at high RPM or whilst revving the engine after letting the vehicle idle for about 20mins. The stem seals prevent oil from getting into the combustion chamber. When they fail, they allow the oil to pass which is then burnt off, producing blue smoke. Most of the time, stem seals fail due to age, poor oil changes, wrong oil grades or poor-quality oil used in the engine.

Symptoms: Some of the symptoms you will be experiencing is high oil consumption, lack of power, engine vibration, noisy lifters, poor performance, lower miles per gallon and blue smoke.
